TRUMBULL COUNTY ENGINEER PLANS

BRIDGE MAINTENANCE ON THE

HISTORIC NEWTON TOWNSHIP CEMETERY BRIDGE

~

The Trumbull County Engineer, in cooperation with Newton Township, proposes maintenance activities on the existing 75-foot, 3-span riveted steel bridge, consisting of a Through Pratt Truss center span and steel beam approach spans on both sides.  The Newton Township Cemetery Bridge spans the West Branch of the Mahoning River and connects Newton Township’s East Side and West Side Cemeteries.  The project proposes to replace the steel girders on the west approach span, repair and replace specified truss members, and replace deteriorated rivets.  The proposed project is scheduled to begin construction in summer/fall 2022.

During project construction, the Newton Township Cemetery Bridge will be closed to pedestrian and bicycle traffic for a maximum of 75 consecutive calendar days.  The proposed pedestrian and bicycle detour route for this closure will utilize Ridge Road, N. Canal Street, and Broad Street (State Route [SR] 534).  Construction and bridge closure/detour information will be posted along Ridge Road, N. Canal Street and Broad Street (SR 534) and on the Trumbull County Engineer’s webpage, engineer.co.trumbull.oh.us, and Newton Township’s webpage, newtontwptc.org, prior to the start of construction activities.

To ensure the decision-making process is comprehensive, Trumbull County Engineer, Randy Smith, is seeking comments from the public about the social, environmental and economic impacts of this proposed project.  Environmental impacts include those involving archeological, architectural and ecological resources, regulated materials and the general location of the project. Trumbull County Engineer also requests information regarding the presence of any known cultural resources in the vicinity of the project including prehistoric and historic archaeological sites, historic bridges, historic buildings, landmarks and districts.

Any questions/concerns about the project should be directed to Mr. Gary W. Shaffer, P.E. by April 29, 2022, at the Trumbull County Engineer’s Office, 650 North River Road, Warren, Ohio 44483 or by telephone at 330-675-2640 or by email at HWShaffe@co.trumbull.oh.us.
